Dimensions: 54cm x 43.5cm
Materials: Original oil on cotton duck canvas.

Field Arrangement is a surreal abstract oil painting that plays with perception, layering framed realities within a single composition. A painting within a painting, it creates the illusion of suspended canvas, where three white silhouettes dance within a softly illuminated landscape. This central image is bordered, segmented, and contained. Yet, its glowing, shifting elements suggest something unsettling beneath the surface.

The figures, faceless and ghostlike, exist within a space that seems both familiar and unreal. Their dreamlike world is framed twice over: once by the edges of their own ‘canvas’ and again by the warm, golden border that frames the environment above—an upper white expanse etched with delicate, feathery patterns and a lower half infused with glowing green and amber tones. Their elongated shadows stretch forward, deepening the sense of spatial ambiguity.

Beyond this enclosed scene, the ‘background’ unfolds like a patterned wallpaper. A soft, textured expanse of pale blue is adorned with amorphous orange creatures that resemble livestock roaming a field. These figures, warped and fluid, hint at the uncanny—recognisable yet strange, as if they are caught in motion or transition. Their presence, alongside the trompe l'œil effect, disrupts the stability of the image, blurring the boundaries between real and illusionary space.

Grounding the composition is a deep green and purple horizontal band at the bottom of the painting. Acting as both a foundation and a rupture, this dark expanse introduces a sense of weight, contrast, and division—reinforcing the experience of limits. It serves as a threshold, a visual barrier that separates the dreamlike upper world from something deeper, more ambiguous, beneath.

This surreal abstract oil painting explores the tension between containments and transcendence, using borders, divisions, and layered depth to evoke an interplay between the uncanny and the sublime. Light, colour, and texture shift across its surfaces, inviting the viewer to question where one reality ends and another begins.

Both structured and fluid, familiar yet disorienting, Field Arrangement transforms visual perception into a liminal, introspective experience.
